Anecdote – Night Weaning Wk 1

October 21st, 2005 · No Comments · General

After 20 months of unrestricted nursings, day and night, I have decided that I am feeling overly touched…thus on 12 Sept, I begun weaning off the night feeds and want to work towards him sleeping through the night and would like to record my thoughts here…

Now that Donald can understand more things, I told him that ‘nan-nan’ is sleeping at night, that he can nurse only when the sun comes out. I have tried this several months back, he could not comprehend and cried alot. Now, he actually understood and allowed rocking or drinking fresh milk as an alternative to nursing.

In the middle of the night, when he wants to nurse, I would remind him again and even pull open the curtain to let him see that outside is still dark. In the mornings, I would keep my promise and tell him that the sun is out, it is bright outside, therefore he can nurse.

He still wakes up in the middle of the night, up to 3 times. Usually one of the wakings, he would point to the kitchen, and I would bring him there and warm up some milk for him. Other times, he would fall back to sleep if I carry and rock him abit.

Sometimes I am tired and took a shortcut and allowed him to nurse so that we could both sleep…. and realised that it was a bad decision. Because he suddenly realised that he could have ‘his way’ if he cries more and I realised that if I do not sacrifice a few nights to persists through, if I take a shortcut, I would actually cause my plans to take a few steps back.

A good thing that has taken place from this plan is that Donald began to eat more during the day, which I am pleasantly surprised and pleased. That is also one of the motivation to move towards my goal.

Right now, after 1 week, I have not yet reach my goal because even though he has wean off night nursings, he still takes 1 milk feed. I plan to slowly substitute it with water in hope that he would find it NOT worthwhile waking up for water. And of course, he has not slept through the night yet, so still have to work hard!
