For first shoes, when babies are still learning to walk, I recommend
1. Pigeon Shoes
2. Shoo Shoos
Below is my personal experience with Pigeon Shoes.
When Donald took his 1st assisted steps, I went out and bought several pairs of shoes. But he didn’t like to walk, after a few steps, he preferred to continue crawling.
One day, I went to look for a pair of snoopy soft shoes at isetan, I came across the pigeon counter, it was when they 1st launched their shoes series. It was pretty expensive, like S$65 per pair, so I thought, since they grow out of their shoes so quickly, no point buying such an expensive one, but I was curious, so I tried them on Donald anyway.
I got the salesgirl to get me a pair of the snoopy soft shoes and a pair of the pigeon shoes. Donald tried on the snoopy one, we made him walk to a toy, he took a few steps and decided to continue crawling.
Then we tried on the pigeon one, he walked happily all the way to the toy!
We thought it was just coincidence, so we did the test again (cos i was trying out different colours too), and the same thing happened!
The pigeon lady told me that babies, when they 1st learn to walk, they use their full set of toes to help them find their balance. And if you look carefully at our babies’ feet, their feet’s broadest area is in fact their toe area. Whereas for adults, the broadest is usually just after our toes, around the bony area. That’s the difference for pigeon shoes. Their shoe has broad space at the toes so that inside the shoe, your child can still use their toes to find their balance, whereas many other children shoes ‘bind’ up the toes.
They have 2 types, one without the hard sole, that’s for babies learning to stand and balance. The one with the sole is for babies learning to walk. The thing is they only make shoes up to size 13.5cm. I ask the lady why? Cos my son had to take the 13.5cm, which means he cannot wear pigeon shoes when he outgrows this pair. She mentioned that this is only to ensure babies learn to walk correctly, after they know how to walk, they can wear any shoe.
So since it was so expensive, we decided to make the best out of it and made Donald wear that pair of shoe day in and day out, with whatever outfit and voila! He could walk very well soon after.
